Summary of qualifications:

I am a consultant focusing on the use of technology in the real world. I have been an editor at The New York Times, a newsroom technology consultant, have worked on newspaper design and write about technology and the real world.

Work experience March 1998 to present

Freelance writer, consultant I write on technology, newspaper and financial issues for publications such as The New York Times, NewsInc., The Cole Papers and Family Money. I also consult with companies on technology issues, help businesses with servers, networks and software, work on social media projects and help companies determine when -- and when not -- to spend money on technology.

I was acting deputy editor for Ziff-Davis Media's Interactive Week from June 2000 to July 2001, coordinating plans to choose and install and publishing system. During that time, I also helped direct coverage of the social and business changes wrought by the Internet.

Prior to the ZD job, I was a deputy directory at Belo Interactive, an Internet startup carved out of the nation's 8th-largest media company, revamping the group's IT department and managing relationships between Belo Interactive and the parent company's newspaper and TV properties..

I have also written for Money magazine (finance and tax stories) and ABC News.com (political and national affairs)

 September 1997 to March 1998

InfoWorld San Mateo, CA / New Jersey Senior Editor. I covered IBM, focusing on the company and its strategic initiatives, particularly as they pertained to InfoWorld's core readership of corporate IT managers.

August 1992 to September 1997

The New York Times New York, NY Assistant to the Editor, News Technology. I was a consultant to the newsroom on technology-related issues. I trained most of the Times reporters and editors to use computers as a reporting tool, and then worked with them on stories to reinforce their new skills. These stories exposed poor management practices on Fortune 500 corporate boards, relationships between elected officials and their financial backers and poked holes in city and state budget proposals.

I also tracked what was happening in the computer, publishing and related industries in order to help others cover these industries as well as looking for tools that could be used in the newsroom. This included writing stories for publication as well as documentation and training manuals for use in the operation of the newspaper.

October 1980 to August 1992

The Times-Picayune New Orleans, LA Sunday News Editor, Pagination Editor. As Sunday News Editor, I worked with editors, artists and photographers to plan the paper and supervised the editors and production personnel who produced the paper.

In the early ‘80s, I showed the paper’s art department how to use spreadsheets to track election day results and generate maps and charts which showed how candidates fared by precinct and demographic group. We then moved in to projects analyzing the budgets of the myriad governmental entities in Louisiana, political donors and the projects those donors were awarded.

Concurrently, I converted the newspaper to pagination, ran a training program on technology, worked on the color and picture desk projects and helped coordinate newsroom computer changes with managers of the burgeoning Macintosh network.

Makeup Editor. I was the newsroom's liaison with the production and advertising departments, ensuring that newsroom managers were aware of problems that could affect schedules as well as alerting production supervisors to similar problems in the newsroom.

January 1980 to October 1980

The Orlando Sentinel Orlando, FL Layout editor, copy editor. Worked with Editorial and Business departments to produce Sunday Op-Ed and Business sections and was Page One editor on weekends.

July 1978 to December 1979

The Sarasota Journal Sarasota, FL Assistant News Editor. I was news editor for the Monday newspaper and filled in as layout and wire editor.

October 1976 to July 1978

Freelance photographer. Worked in central and southwest Florida doing advertising and fashion photography as well as freelancing for newspapers and magazines.

October 1973 to October 1976

The Tampa Tribune Tampa, FL Photographer. Worked in the Tampa office for 18 months, then transferred to a bureau as The Tribune began its zoning operation.
